Breaking news from Minnesota reveals a tragic incident involving lawmakers, with one lawmaker and her spouse fatally shot, while another lawmaker and his spouse sustained injuries in separate, targeted shootings at their eastern Minnesota home near Minneapolis. Governor Tim Walz confirmed that State Representative Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark were killed in what appears to be a politically motivated assassination.
He expressed condolences, stating, “Minnesota’s thoughts and prayers are with her family, her loved ones, her children, and her parents.” State Senator Mark Hoffman and his wife Yvette, who were both shot multiple times, are currently out of surgery and are reportedly in stable condition, prompting cautious optimism regarding their recovery following the assassination attempt.
Officials reported that the suspect posed as a law enforcement officer, equipped with a gun, a taser, a badge, a uniform, and a vehicle resembling a police car, details of which remain unclear. An extensive manhunt is underway to locate the suspect, who engaged in a shootout with police while fleeing the scene of the attack on the Hortman residence.
FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino indicated that the FBI is actively involved in the investigation, with resources deployed to the area, as confirmed by Attorney General Pam Bondi. In the wake of the events, former President Donald Trump remarked on the situation, emphasizing that it appears to be a targeted attack against lawmakers. He reassured the public that law enforcement, including the FBI, would pursue justice against anyone involved to the fullest extent of the law, condemning the horrific violence exhibited in this incident.
