Lakers Re-Sign Kobe Bufkin: What’s Next for the Team?
In a decisive move just hours after addressing a roster vacancy, the Los Angeles Lakers have officially re-signed Kobe Bufkin. The agreement involves a two-year deal featuring a player option for the 2026-27 season, according to sources confirmed by the California Post.
Buffkin’s Performance with South Bay
Last season, Bufkin showcased impressive skills while playing for the Lakers’ South Bay G League affiliate, leading the team with a significant average of 26.7 points per game. His shooting was remarkably efficient, boasting a field goal percentage of 51.3%, including an impressive 43.1% from three-point range. In addition to his scoring prowess, he contributed 4.3 assists and 4.1 rebounds per game.
- Season-high performance: Tied with 41 points in a victory against Capital City Go-Go.
- Overall impact: Bufkin has become a key player for the South Bay team.
Previous Tenure and Journey
This isn’t Bufkin’s first stint with the Lakers. He signed a 10-day contract with the team in January, participating in four games before returning to the G League. His basketball journey also included a 10-day hardship deal with the Memphis Grizzlies in November.
Bufkin was selected as the No. 15 pick in the 2023 NBA Draft from the University of Michigan. Prior to his time with the Lakers, he played two seasons with the Atlanta Hawks before being traded to the Brooklyn Nets in September 2023, where he was subsequently waived in October.
What This Means for the Lakers
Rob Pelinka, the Lakers’ president of basketball operations, hinted that the team was looking to fill their 15th roster spot. With Bufkin’s re-signing, it appears they are banking on his potential and previous performance to bolster the team’s roster as they eye postseason aspirations.
