Adam Edstrom Placed on Long-Term Injured Reserve Again
CHICAGO — Just months after returning from a substantial injury, Adam Edstrom finds himself back on the sidelines. The New York Rangers confirmed that Edstrom has been placed on long-term injured reserve (LTIR) due to a lower-body injury, just 30 games into the new NHL season.
Second Injury in Less Than a Year
This recent injury is not a recurrence of the one he sustained on February 1 of last season, which sidelined him for the remainder of the 2024-25 campaign, according to sources. After various evaluations revealed that Edstrom’s recovery was not progressing as hoped, the Rangers made the tough decision to place their fourth player on LTIR this season.
- Edstrom’s History:
- Previous season injury led to surgery
- Returned to training camp in preparation for the current season
- This season’s stats: 2 goals and 2 assists in 24 games, primarily on the fourth line.
Coach’s Comments
Head coach Mike Sullivan provided updates on Edstrom’s condition following a recent 3-0 loss against the Chicago Blackhawks. He stated, "He was continuing to be evaluated here over the last few days. Our medical team concluded that this was the best course of action for him moving forward to ensure he is healthy and ready for the lineup."
Ongoing Team Adjustments
Edstrom’s absence contributes to the Rangers’ evolving roster dynamics. Recently, defenseman Urho Vaakanainen was a healthy scratch for the seventh consecutive game, and Taylor Raddysh missed his second game in a row after playing in 30 straight matches. Sullivan explained:
"Taylor and I had a discussion about it. We’re trying to put guys in the lineup that give us the best chance to win."
With the aim of improving consistency, Jaro Chmelar was brought in, who is performing exceptionally well with the Hartford Wolf Pack.
Current Team Statistics
- Leading NHL in hits: 813
- Top Hitter: Will Cuylle with 104 hits, ranking fifth overall in the league.
Upcoming Schedule
The Rangers have a scheduled day off on Thursday, returning to practice on Friday before facing the Montreal Canadiens on Saturday at Madison Square Garden.
