Armand Membou’s Challenging Performance in Jets’ Loss to Cowboys
A Tough Day for the Rookie Tackle
In a penalty-filled game, New York Jets rookie right tackle Armand Membou faced an avalanche of challenges during a 37-22 defeat against the Dallas Cowboys. His performance included multiple flags:
- Illegal man downfield
- Holding
- False start
- Offside
This barrage of penalties stood in stark contrast to his previous four games, where he had managed to avoid any infractions.
Support from Teammates
Following the game, Membou chose to bypass interview opportunities, opting instead to retreat into his headphones as he exited the locker room. His teammate, second-year left tackle Olu Fashanu, stepped in to provide encouragement:
“First and foremost, chin up. He’s a rookie, so it’s inevitable that mistakes will happen. You can’t dwell on it too much. Armand is super smart. You learn from it.”
Fashanu, recalling his own rookie experience, emphasized the importance of resilience and growth:
“I think he’s been doing a phenomenal job with that.”
Team Struggles and Penalties
The Jets accumulated 11 penalties for a total of 91 yards, adding to their already concerning two-game total of 24 penalties resulting in 192 yards. Reflecting on this issue, Fashanu noted:
“Before you shift blame on anyone, you have to look at yourself. For me, there are games I haven’t been playing up to my standard.”
Cowboys’ Triumph and Historical Moments
The Cowboys’ head coach, Brian Schottenheimer, familiar face for Jets fans from his stint as offensive coordinator from 2006-2011, celebrated a significant milestone by securing his first career road win in a familiar setting. He dismissed the emotional weight of the moment, stating:
“I don’t even think about that, I’ll be honest with you.”
Schottenheimer also took a moment to recognize Jets security guard Bobby Mastrodi and former Jets star Curtis Martin, noting their enduring connections:
“These are guys that I bled with… It was special to be in that locker room and celebrate with those guys.”
Injury Setbacks for the Jets
In addition to Membou’s struggles, rookie linebacker Kiko Mauigoa was spotted post-game wearing a walking boot on his left foot. This injury poses additional problems for the Jets, as Mauigoa has been thrust into a starting role due to injuries sidelining Quincy Williams and Marcelino McCrary-Ball.
Another rookie, defensive end Tyler Baron, missed a crucial tackle on a 66-yard run by Cowboys running back Javonte Williams just before halftime, expressing remorse afterward:
“I’ve just got to make that play. That’s a play I’m supposed to make… I’ll just make sure the next time I’m in that position, I’ll just make that play.”
Injury Report
The Jets’ absence list also included defensive end Jermaine Johnson, cornerback Michael Carter II, running back Kene Nwangwu, and several others, highlighting the ongoing struggles with health in the team.
