On this Independence Day, rallies across Southern California called for an end to federal immigration raids, with demonstrators arguing that these raids are tearing families apart and destroying lives. In Los Angeles, several hundred protesters gathered to voice their demands for the National Guard to withdraw and to reclaim their streets. The protests spanned from Charlotte to Houston, with many participants opting for activism over traditional July 4th barbecues.
During the “Free America” demonstrations, large crowds marched along a 1.5-mile route starting from City Hall, criticizing President Trump’s policies, especially regarding deportation sweeps and ICE raids. In a move reflective of California’s political climate, Governor Newsom officially declared July 4th as Independence Day in California, emphasizing the state’s commitment to the ideals of equality and the inalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
While the protests aimed to highlight perceived attacks on freedoms, some argued that the timing was inappropriate for such demonstrations, despite the established right to protest. Political analyst Matt Klink remarked on the significance of the day, stating that it should evoke pride in American identity regardless of who currently holds office. So far, protests in Echo Park and downtown Los Angeles have remained peaceful, with updates expected as the day progresses.
