Protests erupted across the Valley today as part of a nationwide movement dubbed “No Kings Day,” directly responding to the policies of the Trump administration. This day of activism coincided with a military parade in Washington, D.C., celebrating the establishment of the U.S. Army, and it also marked President Trump’s 79th birthday.
A live feed from the parade continues to show festivities in D.C., but back in the Valley, thousands took to the streets in cities like Chandler, Tempe, Scottsdale, Surprise, and downtown Phoenix. Local police reported that the gatherings remained largely peaceful, with substantial attendance noted in downtown Phoenix, where demonstrators congregated at the state capitol.
While the overall atmosphere was calm, tensions flared at times. One individual was seen being escorted away in handcuffs, though the Department of Public Safety has yet to confirm the reason for his detainment. Notably, video footage captured a brief altercation between some protesters and a group of counter-protesters, highlighting the division surrounding the issues being addressed today.
As the day unfolds in both the Valley and the nation, organizers and participants aim to voice their concerns about the current political climate, seeking a collective impact from their activism. Further details from the ongoing parade in D.C. will be shared shortly.
